I actually have a good bit of background in streaming media, and am familiar with the various technologies. What really got me was what the actual physical media and bus architectures are.

In your example, if they can provide for 200 simultaneous users, then what is the bandwidth per user? Unicast? Multicast?

If each flick is a 1Mb stream, that means 200Mbps of traffic ... more than 100Mb Ethernet to each seat? That also means that the bus architecture of the server is able to support more than 200Mbps+ continuous. Unless maybe there are numerous video servers running from a shared storage sub-system ... each serving a different portion of the plane?

I fully understand that theses are not excessively high numbers, but at the same time I was surprised to see this on such a large scale and a huge protion of the Singapore Airlines fleet.

Per Franks post ... I'm digging around to see if I can find the technology partner producing the system to understand more. I've thought about the fact that they *could* be using the reduced size LCD panels to reduce the overall screen resolution, resulting in lower bandwidth requirements. But is this all being done with hub-and-spoke wiring? End-runs to each seat? It's just slightly fascinating to me ... :-)

P.S. Anyone else going to George Gilders Telecosm this year?
