Tom - as you say - there is no excuse. It is a problem of inaction and indecision. As we all awoke on Monday the news was that the bullet had been dodged. As the day wore on the story started to emerge. My memory is that when I arrived in Indiana on Tuesday night the story first hit me with its impact.

Beyond this story there is another. That is energy. I posted the following on BDBBR.

Our country has a huge problem with partisan politics being more important than the national well being. Perhaps this will be a wake up call - I doubt it. The next big thing will be winter heating costs and the next fall's elections. The controversy and bickering will rage. Some will simply make up numbers for an issue - few will address issues.

Here are some facts on the numbers issue: infoplease.com

Perhaps the politicians will now adopt a serious Energy Bill. It would be really interesting to list the number of "sacred cows" that have to go to solve the problem. Things we need include:

1. Nuclear power.
2. Severe fuel economy mandates.
3. More off shore drilling.
4. Common gasoline formulations.
5. Expedited siting approvals of energy facilities built to code.

Perhaps most significantly - public pressure to do something that forces the above.
