So you too know all about 10,000 year storms? "those comments from engineers make perfect sense to me"

Why not try an exercise? Knowing that we have weather records for only 100 years, stand in front of a video camera and ::

1.) explain what a 10,000 year storm is;

2.) explain how you know what a 10,000 year storm is like;

3.) explain why we should trust your comments.

4.) play the tape for your friends and neighbors and watch their response.

I know from my own experience obtaining regulatory approval for Chevron's projects that talking about a 10,000 year storm triggers the BS alarm of the public and regulators attending these meetings. When the phrase "10,00 year storm" appears in a newspaper or on television, people expect the speaker to also mention UFOs and Big Foot.

We know about weather for only 100 years, so why not limit comments to what we know.

If "built to withstand a 10,000 year storm" and "built to withstand conditions 50% worse than a 100 year storm" are equivalent . . .

. . . "built to withstand conditions 50% worse than a 100 year storm" communicates what you mean without making you sound crazy to 99% of our society.
