gm 3/4 new.

Well if you drove slow you could get 60 mpg. (48 mpg US) Yes, it was slow and for the low HP, it was not such a fuel miser.

The old MB had good engine character. It would do 4000 rpm and you could not overdrive it. No redline. You could go to 90 downhill and never hurt it. They told you that it could be hurt by dowhill overrevving but that was not so in practice. Today's diesels will redline at 3200 and that should be strictly observed.

It did not matter how hard you drove the MB (190 D), it still got great mileage. I don't think that applies to today's diesels which would need pampering to get economy. But of course they output 7 times the HP, and turbo-charged at that.

Don't know much about VW diesels. (Rabbit). They did not catch fire although they sold respectably. They were peppy and fairly good on fuel. 56 mpg CDN, or 45 US. They used to advertise they would drive across Canada for 20 bucks. (Fuel was about 40 cents/gallon in those days.)

The new MB mini beast should get good mileage. Anyone know what it gets?
