U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice Rehnquist dies
CTV.ca News Staff

U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist has died at age 80.

Kathy Arburg, spokeswoman for the court, said Rehnquist died Saturday night at his Arlington, Va. home. His three children surrounded him in his final moments.

"The Chief Justice battled thyroid cancer since being diagnosed last October and continued to perform his dues on the court until a precipitous decline in his health the last couple of days," she told The Associated Press.

Rehnquist took a seat on his country's Supreme Court in 1971, appointed by President Richard Nixon.

He was elevated to chief justice by President Ronald Reagan in 1986.

Both Reagan and Nixon were Republicans.

John Roberts, currently a nominee for a seat on the Supreme Court, served Rehnquist as a clerk before Rehnquist's elevation to the top job.

Roberts is the first Supreme Court nomination in over 10 years. He is hoping to replace the retiring Sandra Day O'Connor.
