Brooks is being way too artful here. The people who are now mad as hell are the same ones who have been mad as hell since Bush took office. They've been mad as hell about anything and everything that could give them the slightest excuse for being mad as hell.

Most everyone else is still just stunned and doing their best to help in whatever small way they can. The great difference between 9/11 and Katrina is the incredibly and inexcusably sour response (mostly by the MSM and the usual suspects) to the help, decency, and assistance that has been and is still being offered.

A tremendous wave of compassion, empathy, and good will is set to descend upon those who have suffered so terribly through this ordeal. The cumulative generosity of simple Americans who don't realize they are supposed to be "mad as hell."
