Shades Re; "New Orleans" I just watched the most unbelievable performance on Meet the Press. Russert was interviewing a Jefferson Parish offical; the man began his tirade with impassioned demand that FEMA be given vastly expanded powers, made a cabinet level agency with authority OVER local officaldom. THEN incredibly he began to ATTACK FEMA saying that they turned back a shipment of water from Walmart, didn't allow a shipment of diesel oil (probably for the pumps) and that FEMA went and CUT his communication lines which he said HE reconnected and posted armed guards to protect. The guy ended the tirade in tears telling the story of a woman who drowned in a nursing home.

What was that all about? If FEMA was spiking his rescue efforts why does he want their power expanded? Russert was clearly unprepared for this guy. This business is as strange as 911, maybe worse. I lived in New Orleans, right on St. Charles (the street car route) in the middle of the crescent and used to know the place like the back of my hand and nothing about this makes any sense.

I wonder if the Jefferson Parish guy had been "preped" somehow to give a very "pro-FEMA" performance and then in the middle of his effort "turned" on his handlers and in the end broke down in tears? VERY STRANGE. I watch FEMA first hand here in my town after Charlie and they are really a spooky outfit. Efficient but spooky.

I taped this and am going to play it back later.
