Its not academic at all. As I understand it, there is a significant difference in the measurement levels of hurricanes as it is with earthquakes. Therefore, the difference between a CAT 4 vs a CAT 5 is pretty substantial in impact.

Hurricane ratings are fairly linear using their storm surge measurements as compared to earthquakes which are measured on a logarithmic scale (base 10).
