The main reason the "German Muslims" (90% Turks) vote for Schroeder: He and the SPD are promoting a full membership of Turkey in the EU. Merkel and the CDU/CSU like most other EU member countries are opposed to a full Turkey membership. So, now "progressive" media operators are touting this as the "German Muslims" supporting ME brethren no doubt most likely the bad guys in Iraq. Where the truth is that the German Turks vote for the party supporting full EU membership for the country, no more, no less. As usual twisting the truth the liberal way...
