Re water and dehydration: This WebMD link, with questions specifically related to hurricane Katrina, suggests 48-72 hours considering the heat, and depending on other illness within the body of the person...

We can live for some time without food, but not for a huge amount of time without water.

This will be an immediate question when we review the First Responders response....will it be possible to get water to everyone in any type of large catastrophic disaster like this? Even if we store water in our homes, and in our cars, and some in public buildings....can we get to it?

It is one thing to be totally torn apart by a hurricane, but a huge additional problem when major floods are added to the equation. And we should consider what we would do if we don't have enough fuel for helicopters as well. Then what?
