Well, maybe what I said wasn't what I meant.

I have no idea that after this disaster is over, there will be many, many, MANY lessons learned from how this event was handled -- both at a federal and local level.

But this is easily the biggest disaster our government has ever had to deal with -- even when compared with 9/11 (in terms of domestic implications). And it will get worse before it gets better.

My main argument is that those who assert that a "faster" response could have happened simply don't comprehend the scope and logistics of the event. Some, marginal, improvement could surely be made ... but it is an indisputable fact that if you preposition disaster recovery assets close to the disaster area, you could be left without ANY ability to recover, whatsoever.

For example, tejek has repeatedly posted about having ships mobilized more quickly, but you could hardly have stuck ships in the Gulf before the storm had made landfall! Most people can see this obvious fact, but some just don't get it. The same is true of various air assets (helicopters, mostly, since the airport was effectively shut down for a good 36 or more hours).

I'm not saying you can't improve the response. I'm just saying it has been pretty damned good under the circumstances.

The Democrats are just a tad too gleeful about this IMO.
