What do you mean " the shorts do not have to cover " ? Why wouldn't they. They secured their profit. It can't get much lower than
this. If they never close their position , obviously, there's no tax
implications, but, no gain is realized either. What is the benefit of
leaving their position open at this point ?
Again, if trading ceases and you have an uncovered short position,
What happens ? Any insight .
