I don't consider the Rightwing Nuthouse Blog or Paret sources of anything reliable, Alan. I know the White House is in full spin mode right now trying to blame their entire response to the hurricane on anyone else they can find, though. And those SI posts fit right in with that strategy.

The articles I'm reading deal with the total absence of leadership by FEMA, the Bush administration budget cuts that led to the levees not being maintained, and Bush's clueless first responses, total ignorance and lack of general leadership.

I'm not sure what the technicalities are regarding the timeline in those posts you shared, and I'm sure we will be hearing more about them, but my understanding is that the mayor of New Orleans and Governor Blanco asked for all sorts of help from the federal government much earlier. We will see later in the week probably how the facts play out as there is more serious news analysis. In the meantime, I will withhold judgment on that part of the debacle, but there is still plenty of responsibility Bush and FEMA did not shoulder well.

I hope there is a Congressional investigation, because frankly as an American I do not feel very safe. On the other hand, I live in a very expensive neighborhood so I probably have nothing to worry about!
