On its face, O'Connor's offer to stay on until her replace is seated seems altruistic. What it really does is give Bush's enemies an unlimited amount of time to do their business. It takes the pressure off them and puts it on Bush and the rest of the country.

Somebody should counsel O'connor to step back gracefully. Now.
