"I'm one of those people who believes the government should exist to provide police protection, maintain the roads and put out fires." That does not surprise me about you. Of course I am as different as can be from that. I believe in a generous safety net, national health insurance, really high quality public schools, legal assistance for indigent defendants, and a whole bunch of programs that give children born to disadvantaged families a chance to pursue the American dream. I don't believe any child should go hungry, because hungry children cannot learn effectively. So many libertarians and conservatives seem to be quite proud of the belief system you espouse. I think it utterly lacks compassion. Not everyone is poor because they are just lazy. I think "liberals" have a better understanding of all the things that can go wrong in life, and believe in helping. Libertarians and conservatives don't. I don't know how any of you can sleep at night--your belief systems go against the spirit of Christianity, and yet most of you profess to be Christians. It is a complete mystery to me how you all can think like that. I am totally befuddled. I wish someone would explain it to me.
