I think those that choose to criticize FEMA or any of the Federal assistance are either failing to realize the SIZE of the devastation or just looking for an opportunity to criticize the administration. I do think the Govenor of Louisianna was obstinate in refusing to turn over direction to the Feds (hasnt to this day) when it became obvious it was more then the locals could handle, and I think the Mayor was at least initially ill informed and lacking the skills necessary to take the proper steps just before and just after the hurricane to save lives and property. But, if you step back and look at this from afar, you can see NEW ORLEANS written all over everything. Its the BIG EASY attitude.
Now, if you contrast the disaster in N.O. with Mississippi (where the damage was FAR WORSE from the storm itself) you can see why. Haley Barbour took drastic steps immediately before and immediately after which limited the loss of life, there was of course little he could do to limit property damage. jdn
