Perhaps you missed the story about the 50 or so firefighters from Baltimore(?) who were diverted from rescue operations so they could be a backdrop for the prez while he pressed the flesh, or the one about the Secret Service shutting down communications at the Superdome so Laura could get a photo op. I might give the prez some credit for trying to do the right thing, but his handlers and yes men are genetically incapable of doing anything that is not a totally managed political event. Even so, if first impressions are the most telling, and they usually are, Bush's initial comments from the rose garden after returning to DC were utterly lame, detached and sounded like he was using the opportunity to subtly remind america once again that the true virtue of government is to become so small it can be drowned in Grover Norquist's bathtub. Too bad it was the city of NO that drowned instead.
