Sport Italia Selects Scientific-Atlanta PowerVu Digital Video Compression For Secure Delivery Of New Horse Racing Programming
Thousands of locations across Italy to receive new horse racing programming
ATLANTA, Sept. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The rollout of SISAL Sport Italia's new video horse racing network is underway across Italy using Scientific-Atlanta's PowerVu(R) MPEG-2/DVB digital video compression system for high-quality, secure delivery of programming and data services. The network, with over 1000 sites already installed, is expected to grow to 3500 sites by October 1997. SISAL Sport Italia anticipates expanding the PowerVu system to include a network of 5000 betting parlor, lounge, and other leisure establishments when it is fully implemented. "The PowerVu system's ability to deliver the security we require for this type of operation was paramount in our selection of Scientific-Atlanta's equipment," said Paolo Magolati, director of satellite services at SISAL Sport Italia. "The significance of the financial risks and rewards for an undertaking such as this require that we implement to most secure system available. Scientific-Atlanta's decades of security and conditional access experience enabled us to choose their products with a maximum degree of confidence." In addition to the PowerVu system's security and conditional access features, SISAL Sport Italia needed a satellite receiver at a competitive price in order to cost-justify the extensive network. "Our PowerVu Business Satellite Receiver is an ideal solution for applications such as SISAL's where fewer features are required than are available with the PowerVu Commercial Satellite Receiver," said Perry Tanner, president of the Satellite Television Networks business unit at Scientific-Atlanta. "This receiver operates much like a standard VCR, making it both an affordable and practical solution for this and other applications." In addition to providing a more entertaining atmosphere by offering live video of the horse races, the network also holds potential for powerful advertising opportunities. "Since we have a very defined niche audience for horse racing, we can offer potential advertisers unique capabilities to hit this target market with ads specially designed to appeal to the sports enthusiast," added Giovanni Emilio Maggi, director of marketing at SISAL. Advertising revenues will also enable SISAL Sport Italia to defray some of the costs of acquiring the horse racing programming. Telecom Italia/Nuova Telespazio will provide uplink, downlink, and earth station services for the network which will be based in Lucca, Italy. Scientific-Atlanta, Inc.
