Chevron stations place a $1 hold on credit cards regardless of the actual amount of the purchase.

The one dollar authorization makes sure the card is valid.

I can't imagine why a gas station would need to place a larger authorization on the card.

I would imagine if the actual charge puts the credit card holder over their credit limit, the Chevron station still gets paid and the card holder is simply over their limit.
