It makes me cry to think of a United States without New Orleans .....

.......... I will never forget my two visits to New Orleans. A good friend of mine from law school is a federal district judge there. I truly love that city.

I was just thinking today about getting a map of Mexico from National Geographic for my office wall. I better get it now before New Orleans is removed from that little US section of the map. Baton Rouge is readying itself to take its place.

The tragedy that has hit New Orleans is incredible. It clearly changes the physical geography of America. But in way more important ways it alters the cultural and emotional geography of our once great country.

The quality of our country took a serious dive in the wrong direction in November, 2000. The downward spiral has been escalating. This recent turn is really making general evacuation more sensible and palatable.
