Ethanol is also used as a fuel source. When it says the fuel is 10% ethanol, it means only 90%is petroleum distillate. When the fuel is 85% ethanol it mean only 15% of the content is petroleum distillate. Since ethanol produces about 70% of the energy of gasoline, the reduction in efficiency must be factored into the equation when weighing which fuel to purchase. At $3 per gallon a 9 cent discount for 10% ethanol is a break even, and a 10 cent discount is a slight cost discount after factoring the energy output reduction. The E-85 has about 74.5% of the energy output of 99+% gasoline. In my local, the price discount for E-85 (available at 1 local station only) is not enough to justify its use.
