Welllll if the consumer really wants this practice to stop, then they should just start a campaign to dispute any and all gas station charges. Let the station and the CC company sift thru about a million disputed transactions and their associated chargebacks for the fun of it each week.

Or use a credit card and stuff the CC transaction fee to em. Plus get yourself some sort of rebate. Flyer miles, or bonus points toward trinkets, or 1% cash back, or 5% gm rebate when you buy your next fuel efficient car.

Make a sport out of it. If a retailor unnecessarily inconvienences you, cost em some profit.

Only one register open? 15 people in line? Just leave, and leave your pile of items right there in the middle of the floor or in the cart. (BTW, grocery stores really don't rush to get your frozen and refrigerated items back to the proper shelf.)

Gas station gouging you? Grab the whole box of windsheild wipes. You'll need em eventually to clean something up around the house. Hell that window wand thingie comes in handy at home too.
