Hey, CR,

I see you have decided to have a Room of Your Own. I look forward to spending some time here and have brought a case of chardonnay for the housewarming.

I'll start with something that bothers me.

I was just reading a post of LadyL at Compendium about Houston and a plan to organize work and building programs for the displaced that was disrupted by the arrival of the "credit cards" which apparently caused a noticeable change in attitude from one of can do to where's my handout. I don't know how accurate the report is, but .....

One of the reasons I became disillusioned with social services was because of the crippling dependency it engenders and which transmits from generation to generation with little progress. When a system has so many years of failure, isn't it time to radically change the approach? I'm concerned over the pouring out of money into an ill-defined recovery that will only return people to what they left.
And isn't this a good time to try to bring about some changes, as it sounds like the Houston people were doing.
