Actually IBM canceled plans to build the NetPC. I don't think they indicated anything about the NC.

The NetPC was a top-of-the-head rebuff of the NC by MSFT with acquiescence by Intel. It was never well-defined functionally, nor was its potential in the market place well-articulated. Skeptics might suggest it was just obfuscation to confuse and deter the emergence of the NC. Subsequently, Bill Gates also tossed out the notion of a WinTerm, no doubt to add to the confusion.

The problem is that none of these products can be brought to market without a hefty investment by manufacturers, and at some point they have to see an expected market return to continue wanting to develop and market products in new categories. IBM obviously had second thoughts after reviewing results of its market research.

Meanwhile, as far as I know, the NC marches on.
