As Bush Ratings Fall, Katrina Is Tied to Terror
The fallout from Katrina has cost Mr. Bush politically, though Mr. Brown's removal may help a bit. Already soured by an unpopular war in Iraq and high gasoline prices, the public's opinion of Mr. Bush's job performance has fallen noticeably in several polls taken since Katrina hit last week. An Associated Press-Ipsos poll released today said just 39% of Americans surveyed approved of his job performance, the lowest level since AP-Ipsos started keeping track two years ago. Other recent polls with longer life spans have also recently recorded the worst approval ratings of Mr. Bush's presidency. Some 65% of the 1,000 Americans surveyed said they thought the country was "moving in the wrong direction." They were willing to spread blame for the fumbling response to Katrina among federal, state and local officials, but about two-thirds said they believed the federal government wasn't ready for the disaster. The White House has lately begun to try to compare the Katrina relief effort to its war on terrorism, for which it has typically gotten higher marks. But Katrina has also raised questions about the government's ability to handle a terrorist attack on U.S. soil. "What if al Qaeda had blown the New Orleans levees?" conservative columnist Rod Dreher asked in a post at National Review Online. "How much worse would the crony-led FEMA's response have been?"
