Snips pertaining to windows.........

Live Conversations with Project Director Klaus Brauer

JeremyGrubagh: Q: Klaus, How do the window shades work in the 787? As a frequent flyer, I love to look out but hate the glare.

Klaus_Brauer: They're really cool! Imagine you put sunglasses of varying opacity on the airplane that you could change automatically to keep the light level coming in consistent with the light level inside the airplane - full day time or the artificial night time that airlines create to allow passengers to rest. That's what new technology is letting us provide.

Pingechu: Q: What do you think passengers will see as the most noticeable improvement to comfort level?

Klaus _Brauer: The most obvious improvement to the passenger environment will be the windows in the 787. They will be more than 50 percent larger than the windows you are familiar with today and provide a much better connection to the flying experience.

ocean view: Q: How is it possible to shade windows from light with electronics? Will passengers control windows or will the crew control windows?

Klaus_Brauer: The cabin system can set a maximum level, so that passengers can look out without disrupting the light level in the cabin. The passenger will be able to control the shading between the maximum level set by the system and fully opaque. The passengers probably won't even know the system is operating because it will do so gradually.

dr_john: Q: Will we be able to see these custom windows fitted on any current aircraft soon?

Klaus_Brauer: This window technology is in use in some business jets today and, in fact, in some lavatory windows on commercial airplanes. But the 787 will be their first use in the passenger cabin. Other airplanes may adopt this technology in the future but we have no specific plans.

Highfly: Q: Will there be an option for airlines to buy the 787 with regular mechanical window shades if people don't like to give up control of their view to a centralized system?

Klaus_Brauer: Passengers will always have the ability to "open" and "close" their window shade. The difference will be that when they open them, if it is daylight outside and an artificial night inside, their window will be tinted like that of a limousine. If it is daylight inside the airplane, they can open it to a more fully transparent window.
