Fairness dictates that I should note in response that we do have a system for the truly indigent - Medicaid. It is, unfortunately, horribly inefficient and almost universally despised by providers and patients alike.

BTW, the reason I thought there was more latitude for provinces about healthcare is that I remember well about 20 years ago when BC deported a friend of mine who had AIDS the moment he was released from the hospital. At the time, I think the Premier was also arguing against paying for AZT because it was too expensive. OTOH, I don't think Ontario was doing the same thing at the time. Admittedly, it has been a long time and my recollections may be faulty.

(FOR THE RECORD: I'm just musing about things here - not criticizing anything or anyone, etc.)
