For most of us, it's pretty much a non-issue.
However, the provincial government had to make some
kind of clear decision on where it stood wrt sharia
as it was being exercised in some circles of society.
They couldn't put an outright ban on it because
about a dozen or so years ago, the provincial government
made provisions to allow some groups to carry out certain
of their own laws -- this was largely done for native peoples,
but also orthodox Jewish groups, etc... At the time,
the provisions seemed fairly innocuous.
Needless to say, things didn't remain so simple.
