REALTECH Calls on FalconStor's VirtualTape Library Solution to Tame Backup Window

Leading German Software Developer Chooses VTL for Rapid Backup and Restore Capabilities
WALLDORF, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 13, 2005--FalconStor Software, Inc. (Nasdaq:FALC), a leading developer of network storage software solutions, today announced that REALTECH, provider of system management software and technology consultancy specialized in SAP infrastructures, has chosen FalconStor's VirtualTape Library (VTL) solution to simplify and accelerate backup and restore operations for its Microsoft Exchange, SQL, Oracle, and SAP applications. The installation was performed by FalconStor channel partner ELD Datentechnik.
"With data growth doubling yearly, the backup window for our file and database applications had dwindled considerably," said Matthias Bente, manager, internal systems, at REALTECH. "We had to take steps to rectify our backup window situation. The goal was to increase the performance of the backup and at the same time, to improve the restore time, and this is exactly what FalconStor's VTL has enabled us to do."
REALTECH's IT environment consisted of a total of 85 HP, Dell and IBM servers, running a mixture of Windows 2000 Server, Linux and AIX operating systems, and applications that included Oracle, SAP, Microsoft Exchange and SQL, and file and print servers. The direct-attached storage infrastructure accumulated multiple terabytes of data, with a 1 Gigabit Fibre Channel storage area network used for backup. With their backup window rapidly shrinking, REALTECH worked with ELD Datentechnik and determined that FalconStor's VTL would alleviate their backup concerns.
The VTL solution is leveraging REALTECH's Fibre Channel SAN, an Infortrend EonStar A16F device, and its existing backup application, HP's DataProtector 5.5. The VTL appliance is integrated into the existing SAN using two Brocade Silkworm 2250 switches over Fibre Channel. The physical backup infrastructure comprises a StorageTek L180 with three LTO1 drives and 144 slots. FalconStor's VTL software is emulating a StorageTek L180 with six LTO2 drives and 90 slots, and has significantly condensed the backup and restore windows of REALTECH's database, messaging, and file and print server applications, while at the same time providing file- and database-level restore granularity.
A single storage administrator is now responsible for REALTECH's entire storage infrastructure, which has contributed significantly to lowering the total cost of ownership. |
