Perhaps our disagreement (if there is one) lies in our philosophical differences about the role of the federal gov't in general.

You hit the nail on the head.

We as a civilization are pretty new at this - getting ourselves organized and not have each other run into each other (or in the case of air travel - fly into each other). When consider that civilization began only 4 or 5 thousand years ago - when compare to the age of the univers. But, of course if you buy into the narrower view of "Intelligent Design" than the discussion pretty much ends here.

It is inevitable that we have to do this. The trend is for almost everyone to catch up - at least economically close the gap. The world is becoming inter-related.

Of course there is worry about tyranny. Some jerk may just take over and make life miserable for most people. We are getting far more advanced in terms of science and technology than we are socially able to adjust to the new circumstances.

But being reactionary is not the answer. We will not be able to stop advances in science. I can't imagine how we can burn all the books and tear down the internet. Although that is not impossible.

It is inevitable that science and technology are going forward and that we will have to make the appropriate adjustments. We , as human beings, are going to design or define the future. It does not have to be bad.

The point is, we are in the early stages of trying to get ourselves organized. Going into a stage of denial - trying to protect some political concept would be foolish.
