Poll shows racial divide on storm response By Susan Page and Maria Puente, USA TODAY

This is a huge, huge problem in this country. Whites, particularly conservatives but liberals as well, think the racial problem is pretty much behind us. That's why so many whites want to dismantle Affirmative Action. Meanwhile, minorities tend to think just the opposite. And I tend to agree with them.

I was surprised how many racial slurs I heard after the riots in LA right up until I left. Whites were slamming mostly blacks but Latinos as well. Some people at a party at Universal studios asked me if the woman that was with me was my maid.....she was a Latina. The woman in question happened to have just graduated from law school. I could not believe the stuff that was being said......and not just from Republicans. I think everyone is very PC but under the surface, its still all there. And it cuts both ways.

Since moving here, there have been two serious racial incidents. One was during a Mardi Gras celebration where some blacks killed a white guy who interceded in a fight trying to stop it. The white kid turned out to be a great guy but the interesting thing was that the black ring leader was supposed to be too.....I can't remember the particulars but I think he was a jock and a Validictorian of his high school. People were in shock that he killed the white guy.

With this latest incident that Harris posted, I think the blacks beat up some guys just back from Iraq......I think the guys were Latinos, not white. Nonetheless, there was a racial undertone to it.

I guess my point is that racism exists on all sides but when it comes to blacks, whites still hold the purse strings and so blacks continue to feel beholden and to feel like an underclass. Therefore, its not surprising that they see the FEMA ineffectual response as intentional whereas we see it as a massive screw up. And the truth be known, FEMA's screwup was much worse in NO and LA than in MS.
