During that flap about the debit cards, I noticed that the alternative offered was direct deposit or sending a check to one's home. People noted that the recipients not longer had homes and mailboxes, which is why they were designated recipients. I didn't see any comments about the fact that a lot of poor people don't have bank accounts in which to direct deposit.

Which is all preamble to a continued point about skill and knowledge. If you don't know anyone who has a bank account who can tell you what you have to do, you're probably not going to get a bank account. Yes, bank accounts are simple and you can probably figure it out by watching TV or by just going to the bank and asking a lot of dumb questions if you're not too shy to ask dumb questions. But a lot of things we take for granted are harder than that and if you don't know anyone who has ever done them...
