I have never heard liberals use it as something to carry a banner for. I, like you, have heard it mostly from sneering conservatives. Sadly, I do not think those sneering conservatives realize just how much "PC" thinking has cleaned up some pretty soiled habits we used to have in this society. Jokes about race and sexual orientation are (thankfully) now so outre that no one normal makes them in the workplace around people who are not intimate friends(and fellow bigots). While PC probably seems restrictive (especially to bigots) it's actually just mandated politeness. In a society as fractured as ours, I think a bit of mandated politeness is probably called for. Can mandated politeness go overboard? Yeah, but it sure as heck beats the other extreme. Just my two cents.
