2005 - Some recent posts from an AD board about Namenda
(note - there are negative stories but this was a *block*
of positive ones so I thought I would post them)

namenda & 05/23/05 08:41 AM

My husband has been taking Aricept for 1.5 years. He was doing fine for awhile but has started to decline rapidly. I would love to keep him stable in case they come up with something to really help with this horrid disease.
Do you think adding Namenda would help him? Or is it only used in late stage? If so...what dosage would you recommend?
We live out in a small town. I'm not sure we have access to the best medical services. I like to arm myself with information from you folks before we go.
Thankyou for any information you might have, Louise

aricept namenda 05/23/05 09:01 AM

My wife has been using namanda two years now and was doing very good until about two months ago, now her short term memory is just about gone. The drug is very well tollerated with no side effects. It is worth a try. This is the only drug that she is taking, but I know of other people that are taking aricept and namanda ( memantine) that seem to be doing fairly well on it. I started giving this to my wife when she was in the early part of her memory problem. You have to start with 5 mg for about a month and then increase to 10 mg the insructions come with it. You can get it on the internet maybe a little cheaper if you do not have drug coverage. Memantine is the same thing and it is made in europe. go to memantine.com for info

Namenda should be used with Aricept or Exelon.
My husband has been taking both for about 2 years.....
hope it is helping but how do we know when we don't know where they would be without it????? But, hopefully
is doing what it is supposed todo. THERE IS NO CURE

namenda helped 05/25/05 04:51 AM

LOUISE WE ARE ALSO FROM A SMALL TOWN ( ONE GOOD DOCTOR) AND WE HAVE HIM.
BUT NAMENDA HAS HELPED MY GRANDMOTHER VERY MUCH. SHE IS MORE CALM NOW AND HAS VERY FEW HALLUCATIONS. IT DOES TAKE 3-4 WEEKS BUT IT'S WORTH IT. AT LEAST IT WAS FOR HER. SHE WAS JUST DIAGONOSED A FEW WEEKS AGO. SHE IS FINE MOST OF THE TIME AND IS ALERT TO EVERYTHING AND KNOWS WHAT HAPPENED 25 YEARS AGO AS WELL AS WHAT SHE HAD FOR SUPPER LAST NIGHT....
I HOPE THIS HELPS...AS THE FAMILY DIDN'T WANT TO TAKE HER TO THE BIG CITY FOR A NEW DOCTOR....SMALL TOWN DOC REALLY DOES KNOW BEST SOMETIMES...

Husband's experience with Namenda 05/25/05 04:03 PM

My husband has been on Namenda (Mememtine)for approx. 16 months. Was on Exelon also but at the VA home this has been discontinued as I was told it is not necessary in conjunction with the Namenda. They are probably using a study that concluded this because of the cost factor involved. In the past 3 months, my husband's vocabulary has improved dramatically and his speech is also more distinct. The staff says quite often he speaks in complete sentences that are appropriate to the conversation. He is at level 6 and should be getting more limited in communicating rather than the behavior we are observing...so we can't figure this out but just gratefully accept it. Also, his ADL's are much more cooperative and he is not agitated very often. Several months ago the powerful antipsychotic and neuroleptic drugs he was on were discontinued which is another story too long to give here. I give the Namenda credit for much of the improvement and think it is beneficial for all stages. I have not noticed any adverse side effects with it.

Hi everyone 05/26/05 05:15 PM

Thankyou for responding to my question concerning Namenda and aricept. I think I am going to strongly recommend adding Namenda to his aricept. See what the Doc says.
It's so great to be able to communicate with people who have real life experiences.
I love having this lifeline

It works!!!!! 06/02/05 11:13 PM

This is my first post but I am happy to give my feedback
to the question of Namenda in conjunction with Aricept.
My mom started taking Namenda last February. She was starting to become unstable. She ran around the neighborhood in her
underwear a few times and also tried to cut outlet cords
to my computer. I had her doctor put her on Namenda and I started to see improvement within 3 weeks if not sooner.
It was amazing. Her thought process was vastly improved.
I have no doubt she would be in very poor condition if she had not been put on Namenda.
