Going as a plain jane tourist is not a problem. You get less people interacting with you though. I brought a pink camouflage pig outfit, but it was so hot I could only wear it at night. I had more people coming up to me and wanting to talk when I was wearing the costume. A lot of people stayed in costume all the time. I couldn't do it myself. It does not take much effort to bring a wierd hat or a loud outfit, so I would ecourage you to do so. It is great for starting conversations and getting invited to some of private parties. Remember the point is to meet as many people as possible. A lot of people went nude. By the end of the week most people were de-sensitized to it all. Some people just went nude and painted their body. Here are a few important tips. Buy a good set of goggles that fully seal to you face. I only brought wrap around sun glasses and was virtually blind by day 3. The alkaline nature of the sand eats at your eyes, especially with the frequent sand storms that add to the surreal feel of the event. Bring Visine. My neightbour was a vetran Burner so brought plenty to pass out. It saved my life. Also bring a colorful bandana to cover you mouth for the dust storms. The bandana can be a conversation starter if it is unusual. Bring light sticks to wear and gift to people. I bought 200 for $20 on Ebay and had a hoot give them out to people that forgot to bring anything. Burning Man really comes to life at night. It really is amazing and hard to capture accurately on film. Invest in a shade structure. It gets to 107 degrees during the day and you want a place to hide out. You can hide out in the main tent at center camp, but by the end of the week it is really crowded and noisy. Make sure it is a solid structure. It was so windy the first day no one could get their shade structure up. My Kmart shade structure lasted till the last day and then finally blew down in a wicked wind storm. Bring ear plugs. Depending on where you camp some of the desert discos can start at 9 PM and go to 8 AM. I really did not have a problem as I can sleep through most thing. Bring small tokens as gifts. Burning Man is a gift economy. The more personal the gift is the better the response you will get. So hand painted marbles, pins or medallions gets a good reaction. You don't have to gift anything, there is plenty to see and do without it and no one usually refuses you if you don't. It is just a nice touch and you get a great hug or a handshake in return and sometime a gift back. Burning Man can be an intense experience. The ultra hot days, the dust and the sometimes night time temperature that approach freezing bring out the best and worst in people. I saw a number of couples coming apart under the conditions. I was talking to one gorgeous lady that was running a theme camp to acted as a oasis for woman. She was saying a number of ladies were thrown out of their tents by their boyfriends and ended up at their camp because they didn't have a place to sleep. If you have access to one, a RV is a more civilized way to enjoy the festival. You have air conditioning, a shower and central heating. Don't run your generator all night though. People in tents are trying to sleep. I did not mind tenting. I met some interesting people that way.
