Maurice Re: "Secession" We fought our bloodiest war over this very issue and the issue remains unresolved, at least in a philosophical sense. My side (the good guys <g>) claim we had every right to leave the Union. The other guys claim we didn't. It is not an issue the Constitution deals with directly, in a "line and verse" sort of way. But PROOF that we had the Constitutional right to secede is that the victors demanded that the Confederate States place in their state constitutions a clause that gave up the right to secede in the future as a condition of re-admission to the new Union. Most states removed this clause on short order. <g>

Another point upon which we claim the right of secession was the illegal act on the part of the Lincoln government in creating a new state out of the western part of Virginia. The Constitution strictly forbids this (Article IV:3) so Virginia had every right to oppose this Napoleonic style despotism by secession and gave any ally of Virginia the right to secede in sympathy. There are very more similar issues. Hence the Confederacy.
