I think I have to agree with Matthew on any sort of MSFT involvement in Centura. VB is the gal they brought to the dance, for better or worse. Not the best C/S dev tool (not even close), but if they wanted too, MSFT could certainly concentrate some effort ($$$) in making it one.

I do think though that VB carries some bad baggage with it as far as the serious C/S dev community is concerned. I personally don't think of VB as a serious C/S tool. This does leave MSFT with a real hole in their all encompassing product line. I really can't see getting 4GL class productivity with C++; even with their class framework. Perhaps MSFT may begin to position their new Java++ based env. as their 'industrial strength' C/S tool... Nah...

As far as Centura's architecture being old, I prefer to consider it as being established and sound. I've found it (the SqlWindows 16bit env) to be very stable. I have deployed systems based on BETA code in the past. Powerbuilder on the other hand has only given me grief as far as code stability. Both are very good products with a few distinct advantages on either side though.

Centura's 32bit Centura product is quite impressive. The dev. env. is also a little bit more tailorable for people a bit tired of the old outline format. I'm also quite impressed with their initiative to replace their proprietary interpreter underneath the product with a Java code generator (ETA 1st Qtr 97?). Very interesting indeed. With my major client looking forward to porting portions of their large C/S code base to the Inter/Intranet next year, I'm very excited about leveraging all my prior work instead of starting over with some other vendors Java tool.

On SQL Base: a very underrated database. Probably suffering from lack of market awareness, not to mention a room full of elephants as far as competition goes. A couple distinctive product features on this one could help, but really only helps them sell more copies of Centura. Centura could possibly jettison this product for some cash in the near future. That event might be a precursor to a pending buy out. Otherwise they will need some real knock dead features to get a foothold in the back-end market (think n-tier solution assistance or some awesome and cheap replication technology).

As far as uphill battles go -- definatly! I think their current management is excellent, and their restructuring seems to be going great. I'm hoping this company is ripe for a big turnaround sometime early next year. Let's hope they keep concentrating on the fundamentals right now as they 'reinvent' themselves. I'm personally not hoping or looking for a buyout anytime soon. If things go right next year, Centura has a LONG way to go on the upside. The market loves a turnaround company.
