Man Donates $2 Million Home To Katrina Survivors Wed Sep 14, 3:27 PM ET A West Palm Beach man has offered a school teacher 2 million reasons why her family, which was displaced by Hurricane Katrina, should move to the area. The 2 million reasons reflect dollars in value of his house. "It's seven rooms, has four bathrooms. We had some local companies come in to clean it up," said Keith Schwartz, who just bought the $2 million home with a view of Mar A Largo.
"We just redid the floors. Surge Restoration came in. We painted the house; I think it will be fairly comfortable," he said.
Schwartz had planned to rent the home for $10,000 a month, but changed his mind. Now, he's lending the 4,000-square-foot house to the family of Schronderlette Davis-Tucker, who were displaced the hurricane.
"It was very touching hearing what happened to them," he said. "They actually were underwater, had to climb through attic on top of a roof. They were rescued by the Coast Guard on the roof after three days."
WPBF News 25 introduced viewers to the family on Monday, when Davis-Tucker's co-workers and friends at Crystal Lakes Elementary School offered up supplies, and a home for the displaced family.
"My school has been so supportive; they adopted my family," Davis-Tucker said.
Schwartz said he could relate to the family's plight.
"I was out of my house for 10 months from last year's hurricanes," he said. "To give back makes me feel wonderful. My mom's a teacher, as well -- second grade teacher."
"I'm very amazed," Davis-Tucker said. "(Before the hurricane), I was reading story the goodness of gorillas to my class. It's about people doing random acts of kindness -- and this shows acts of kindness. It was from that story. When I get back to school, I will tell students what he's done, because this is wonderful."
