Assuming you buy your next vehicle in 3-5 years, hybrids still won't be cost effective. That is assuming there isn't a significant tax break. You realize there is more than just the cost per mile, and that is significant. Why won't hybrids dominate in the near term? Batteries. Batteries are the weak point, high efficiency batteries don't have many recharge cycles. Chemical batteries don't offer a solution, things like superflywheels might. But we have avoided doing the research since Reagan, so...
