It's not so much for constructing your genealogy, but for finding connections you didn't know existed or confirming one you suspected but had no proof.

Y-DNA in males is passed from father to son without being altered (barring a mutation)so all males with the same surname in a family should have identical Y-DNA going back hundreds of years. DNA projects are being set up on a surname basis to try to connect family lines from all over the world. I've already had one breakthrough using the testing.

Here's a link to the biggest testing company that has hundreds of surnames projects up and running. It's really pretty cool. : )
