Meth impacting area dentists
NewsRadio750KXL ^ | 9/15/05 | KXL

One local dentist said he has been pulling up to 50 teeth a day.

Oregon's methamphetamine epidemic is having an unusual impact on local dentists.

Meth users expose themselves to toxic chemicals that break down the mouth and teeth, and as a result, one local dentist said he has been pulling up to 50 teeth a day. Doctor Mark Thomas, with Gentle Dental, said meth addicts aren't thinking ahead.

"Before you start down the road of meth use, you need to think about what that could do to you long-term. Sacrificing your smile could be the biggest mistake you made."

Meth can also cause dangerous interactions with common dental anesthetics, making it important for dentists to know if their patient is addicted to the deadly drug.
