Gus > the US's "superpower status" is on the wane

No doubt about that and, interestingly, as result of its own delusions of grandeur, greed, corruption, wrong priorities and mismanagement of its affairs. Like Don Quixote, the US has no enemies except those it creates as result of its religious, geopolitical and other fantasies and has created an enormous military to meet those "enemies". In fact, what it has done is create a Frankenstein which will eventually kill its maker. The only problem is how many innocents this Frankenstein kills in the meanwhile.

> the US will likely meet the same fate as the Soviet Union --a sudden, stunning collapse

Death is always a sudden event even if it follows a long illness -- and there is no doubt, to me anyway, that the US has been ill for quite some time, certainly throughout the currency of the present administration -- and I wasn't mad about the previous one either but at least it was a lot better for "ordinary" Americans than this one -- and it got rid of the national debt.

> I think it's comforting, intellectually reassuring, for a lot of people around the world to fool themselves into believing that the US still is a superpower

It's likewise comforting for an increasing number of people, everywhere, to believe the US is finished simply because W is doing badly in the "polls". It's not Argentina -- yet!
