I heard on NPR today that Talabani, the Iraqi President, said their is one man holding back the Shia fury: Sistani. He said Sistani would rather see half of the Shias killed than for a civil war to take place. So the Shias are obeying Sistani. If the Sunnis kill Sistani, then watch all hell break loose. I hope our troops are out by then.

I think that's the public face of Sistani. I think privately he supports the Shiite Brigade which is the Shia militia. Its the Shiite Brigade that is fighting the Sunnis. He can't publicly acknowledge that fact until the US is out of the country. One more thing.........I am not sure how strong his committment to democracy is.

But I agree with you.......we've go to get the troops out before all hell breaks lose. And now there is a second reason after Bush's speech last nite..........to cut down on the deficit.
