I've already described my first trip to NO. Noted that there was a huge military and law enforcement presence, which was well known.

Went in again today on a solo trip, no pass, no permit, no US Marshall escort like the first time.

Got in but it took some doing and some dancing around the checkpoints. Got turned back a couple of times.

Observations:

My trip today required me to go on Canal St. via Metairie Road. Bizarre sights, including a fishing boat on its side on the Canal St. neutral ground on top of the new trolley line's tracks. Evidence of high water everywhere. Still depopulated except for emergency vehicles, troops and police.

Not quite as substantial a military presence as before. My gut tells me that the troops are slowly being brought out, which is corroborated by the increased military traffic going west on I-10.

My high rise still has no electricity and water is being pumped out of the basement. Got a good workout walking up to my office. Only one blown out window and a little water damage from leaking ceiling tiles. Not bad in the big scheme of things.

Nagin's optimism is understandable, but I don't see any kind of immediate business presence downtown for some time; things are still quite raw.

The military presence Uptown is down considerably, no constant patrolling. Hope the thugs aren't reading this.
