There is a difference between North Korea and Iran.

North Korea doesn't have vast hydrocarbon reserves so needs other energy supplies. Iran has huge reserves and is wanting to build a pipeline to India, at a cost of $billions and with security problems as it would cross Afghanistan and Pakistan. But they also say they are short of energy and therefore need nuclear power? Huh? I guess that's Islamic Jihad logic.

They don't need energy. They have got it. They can burn their hydrocarbons right there instead of in India. Or they could process them into methanol and other easily shipped products to earn a lot of money from exports.

They want nuclear bombs to murder Jews and conduct Islamic Jihad against The Great Satan and any other infidels or apostates who fail to obey them, or offend them, or otherwise need to be killed.

Islamic Jihad having nuclear bombs would be even less fun than the Third Reich having them.

But also, North Korea wants nukes and China doesn't mind them having them because North Korea is a puppet of China which is lining up for conflict over Taiwan and having a nuclear threat in the north suits China very well while Taiwan is resolved. That threat might keep South Korea and Japan on the sidelines and make the USA nervous.

China might support Iran for now and it seems that Russia might too, to give the USA more problems to deal with, in the same way that Carter gave the USSR their own Vietnam to deal with in Afghanistan. The more the USA has to deal with elsewhere, the less energy they'll be able to bring to bear on Taiwan/China/Russia/North Korea.
