You misinterpreted my post. No envy, at all. Cudda fooled me. Did, actually.
Certainly some admiration for great places to live. Warmer. I never have figured out why you Canadians stay up there. D***, man, don't you know it's COLD there??? :-)
You sometimes mistake tongue in cheek argot with something else entirely. Putting the moderator on is a death penalty offense! :-)
Rest assured. I have nothing against the Americans owning land. Good. One of these days, if we totally lose it, we might buy that ice sheet called Canada! :-)
I still think you should buy it. It would make you feel better. :-) From who? Ourselves? We already got it! And buying it accomplishes nothing anyway. We bought the Louisiana Territory from the French, but the Indians claim it was theirs and the French didn't have title!
I didn't need the Falklands, Virgin Islands lesson, btw! I was speaking rhetorically when I said "They are independent but a dependency of the UK (if that makes any sense)!" I used the exclamation mark to speak to the curious nuances in the English language. The screwiness of the relationship of Britain to pieces of its former is so atrocious, I'm convinced THEY can't keep it straight!
Why isn't Belize on that list, anyway? The Belicians didn't want the Brits to leave and their crying made the Brits feel so bad they promised to come back to fight if the Guatemalans (who claimed Belize was theirs) ever attacked. Doesn't that make them a dependency?
"WTH business of yours is the status of Puerto Rico, anyway? You're Canadian. You plan on taking it from the US?"
No. My interest in the status is for personal knowledge and to hopefully argue and discuss in an informed manner. The Puerto Ricans don't seem to want to leave. There is a loud, noisy faction (their liberals, most likely :-) that keeps bringing the matter up and the rest of the population keeps voting their schemes down. I doubt the US gov't gives a **** if they decide they want independence. We'll just walk away and all their problems are strictly theirs. They can become another Caribbean cesspool. They certainly won't get automatic US citizenship.
I am not planning to live on an Island. I would like to spend winters in Vegas. I would like a community with theatre, arts, sports teams, fantastic flight connections to anywhere. Islands just don't have it. You can live on an island and get all that. Look at Britain! :-) Great place, but cold and way too humid. I never could understand why the Brits settled in places like VA (hot humid) till I went to GB (cold and humid).
Florida would be nice in many ways but who wants to live a foot or two above sea level. You want Florida? It's yours! :-)
"Since you appear to be unaware of it, the US has no law against Americans owning land in a foreign country"
Sorry, I thought they could only own land in Topeka! So what's the problem with them owning land in the Caymans? I haven't heard the Caymans objecting; why should Canada?
"Maybe you ought to try some capitalism up there"
We do. You fellas pay damn good when you all come down to wrestle a fish to death! We ain't never refused your money yet, have we?! If we hand you back your money you'll have cause to suspect socialism. Socialists have no problem with theft. Look at the USSR. It stole half of Europe!
In the meantime remember WW! and who controlled the skies! Don't be uppity! Which WW and whose skies? One? The Germans sure gave the RAF a good run for its money. And the Brits sure didn't send any bombers over the US.
Two? You think the US didn't have thousands of fighters and bombers in European airspace? And didn't control US airspace? |
