US hails interaction with Jewish Congress

NEW YORK: The United States has welcomed the maiden interaction between President Pervez Musharraf and the Jewish Congress saying it would be opening new vistas of interstate cooperation and minimize tensions in various parts of the world.

US Assistant Secretary of State Cristina Rocca while talking briefly to The News immediately after the first ever meeting between President Musharraf and the Jewish Congress at Marriott Hotel here declined to offer further comments and said the State Department may touch the subject later.

Israel’s Ambassador for Permanent Mission at the United Nations Dan Gillerman talking to this correspondent termed the contact as a watershed in the history of two faiths — Islam and Jewish. He was of the view that Pakistan should accord diplomatic recognition to Israel and both the countries should work for the interest of the humanity hand-in-hand.

He said it was troubling that anti-Semitism had reemerged in some quarters in Europe just 60 years after the Holocaust. This sparked by extremism, he said. "We all have an obligation to eradicate anti-Semitism from all over societies."

He said we reject the Arab boycott against Israel and support every effort of diplomacy and dialogue in the quest fro peace and security. "For our part Jews must work to prevent Islam from being attacked with impunity. Unfortunately, many Muslim believe attacks against Islam are fomented by us."

There exist conspiracy theory mindsets among many Muslims that seek to blame the Jews for the ills of the Muslim world, he said and Jewish leaders must be more active and visible to prevent attacks against Islam, and Muslim leaders in turn must help dispel unfounded conspiracy theories.

He introduced Pakistan’s Ambassador in Washington General Jehangir Karamat as former boss of President Pervez Musharraf before inviting him for speech. General Jehangir in his remarks said with smile since he was a good boss that is why he has been re-engaged for the national service.

A Jew belonging to Karachi and doing business in the United States, Muneer Kazmeer surprised every one through telling his origin. He asked the president if he could visit Pakistan now. Kazmeer who has attained the US citizenship was offered by the president that he could come to Pakistan any time. He later told The News that could speak Urdu but he opted not to divulge any other information about him. He came to the dinner with his spouse.

The Jewish congress chairman introduced to the fellow-guest President Musharraf’s wife and First Lady of Pakistan begum Sehba Musharraf, son Bilal Musharraf and Dr Nasim Ashraf especially.
