There is a near infinite set of spending options in any budget. To exclude one initiative because of others isn't necessarily a wise strategy. Also, there has been commercial byproducts of the space program. Without any space program we wouldn't have weather or communications satellites.

Let's keep politics off the thread. There are plenty of opportunities on SI to deal with the politics of technology.
