Of course, the pension amounts that comes from the fund is much lower than what was promised.

I saw an article a few weeks ago that discussed payouts under the United pension plan. As I remember, a 48-year-old retired pilot's pension dropped drastically, from somewhere around 125,000 to somewhere around 25,000. They said it was the maximum PBGC payout for under age 65, but I don't remember if that number was different for each year closer to 65. Anyway, what the did say, and what surprised me, was that if the pilot waited (and could afford to wait) until age 65 to take his pension, it would be at the full amount.
