I'm not sure where you are coming from re: NYC. I thought that New Orleans was the murder capital(and that certainly fits in with recent events). NYC and NY state have very strong gun control laws. While their murder rates have dropped from what they used to be, the have dropped just as much in states that DON'T have such laws. The theory is that easily available abortion is behind the drop: it is used disproportionately by people who most likely would bear children who would end up as criminals. With easy abortion, those children don't get born. TX has loose gun control laws. It ranks 17th in murder rate. disastercenter.com In 2000, 1238 murders/100K population. NY has tight laws. It ranks 23rd. disastercenter.com In 2000, 952 murders/100K population. In both cases the number of murders peaked in 1990 and has declined since. And the rate hardly mirrors the difference in laws. "If you accept Jefferson's premise (that gov't would have to be overthrown every 20-30 years to keep it democratic), HOW can you deny honest citizenry the right to bear arms?" I don't. But you can't be blase about these matters with benefit. Gun ownership is not justified by that ridiculous bromide: "guns don't kill people". I could say that cyanide doesn't kill people. And if your Government took THAT as a valid argument and allowed me to buy it without question...I could kill half the U.S. in several months. But guns don't kill people. Criminals do. If per capita gun ownership correlates stronly with murder, the human race in Switzerland should be extinct. Almost every adult male is required to have a gov't issued assault rifle in their house. Guns DO kill people. That is why they were invented. They do only if used for such. Explain Switerland. But only if this is ethical. But if it is denied, then everyone will buy their protection underground. "If guns are made illegal, only criminals will have guns." "Nice quiet town with no murders, no drug dealers, no criminals, right? Pretty big city. Many of them bear arms as I believe they should. It would be enlightening, I believe, to see how many guns there are illegally in the hands of criminals versus how many are owned by law abiding citizens.
